For the first time in five years, teachers within the Wawasee Community School Corp. will be getting a pay raise. During a special meeting of the Wawasee school board Tuesday evening, Sept. 22, in Syracuse the board approved a 3.5 percent increase to the base salary for teachers.
NEW PARIS — At least two people were checked at the scene of an accident that occurred around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the intersection of SR 15 and US 6.
Syracuse Police Sgt. Jim Layne was introduced to the Syracuse Town Council during its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, Sept. 15. The council later approved hiring Layne to replace Police Chief Tony Ciriello when he retires at the end of October.

Friday, Sept. 18th, was the first day for public schools in Indiana to begin submitting enrollment reports to the Indiana Department of Education in the process known as average daily membership, or ADM. Wawasee’s preliminary numbers show an overall increase compared to the same time last year.
SYRACUSE — UPDATE: Syracuse Police, Turkey Creek Fire and EMS responded to Fox Run Drive, Syracuse, for a accident involving a moped.
At the scene, police and fire officials reported the driver of the moped had left the roadway, entering a yard and coming to a stop in a driveway on Fox Run Drive.

WARSAW — Scott Tilden, superintendent of the Kosciusko County Highway Department, has announced Kosciusko County Bridge No. 209, which carries Country Club Road over Eagle Creek, will be closed starting Sept. 14, until approximately Nov. 25. The closure will be to replace the bridge structure due to advanced deterioration of the structure.

A special and brief meeting was held late Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 25, by the Wawasee school board in Syracuse for the main purpose of a budget hearing. The budget process continues to move forward and Tuesday’s meeting was a public hearing, though no public input was given.

A legislative study committee will convene in October to find answers to a problem Indiana is facing with a shortage of newly licensed teachers. Details are sketchy, but Circuit Court Judge Michael Reed granted the plaintiffs a preliminary injunction against Oakwood Friday, Aug. 14. However, the injunction does not go into affect until the plaintiffs pay a $25,000 bond. At press time, the county clerk had no record of the bond being paid.
