SYRACUSE — Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department responded to a vehicle versus motorcycle accident Saturday, Aug. 22, ending in one fatality.

Officers responded at 4:18 p.m. to the intersection of US 6 and SR 13 in Syracuse and found Jeffrey Smith, 56, North Webster, suffering from a chest laceration and head injury after striking an SUV operated by Richard Eastman, 75, Roanoke, Ill.

Smith was traveling north on SR 13 on a 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle, and proceeded through the four-way intersection when he struck Eastman’s passenger side. Eastman had slowed at the four-way stop, but had not come to a stop before proceeding into the intersection.

Smith was flown to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne where he later died from his injuries. Smith was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Citations are pending as Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department continues its investigation.
