SOUTH BEND – South Bend’s extra-inning troubles persisted, as Lansing’s Chris Carlson laced a solo home run in the 10th inning to lift the Lugnuts past the Cubs, 3-2, in the rubber game Wednesday night at Four Winds Field.
Lansing (4-3 second half, 46-31 overall) wiped away South Bend’s early 2-0 lead and topped the Cubs (4-3 second half, 33-41 overall) behind Carlson’s two-out shot.
South Bend is 0-6 in extra-innings tilts this season.
Cubs righty Brad Markey allowed two runs in five innings in his first professional start. Markey surrendered five hits and punched out three Lugnuts. Markey retired the first seven batters he faced and only gave up one hit outside of the four-hit fourth inning for Lansing. The 2014 draftee served as Virginia Tech’s Friday-night ace last season.
Cubs shortstop Gleyber Torres (3-for-5, two runs, two stolen bases) posted his 27th multi-hit game of the season.
South Bend lefty Jordan Minch added three shutout stanzas from the bullpen.
Cubs designated hitter Gioskar Amaya (2-for-3) collected another multi-hit night.
In the bottom of the first, Torres, right fielder Kevin Encarnacion and first baseman Yasiel Balaguert smoked consecutive singles, and Balaguert plated Torres to make it 1-0.
Torres began the third with a single, stole second and scampered to third on a groundout. Then on a wild pitch, Torres sprinted home and dove in ahead of the toss to stretch the lead to 2-0.
The Lugnuts climbed on the board in the fourth on an RBI single by right fielder Boomer Collins. Lansing then tied the game when catcher Michael De La Cruz rammed a single up the middle to make it 2-2.
With two outs and two on in the sixth, De La Cruz pushed a soft dribbler up the middle. Cubs second baseman David Bote dove on the edge of the outfield grass, rose to his feet and gunned down Lugnuts center fielder D.J. Davis at the plate.
The Cubs loaded the bases with one out in the eighth. Catcher Erick Castillo, though, bounced into a close 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.
South Bend welcomes Bowling Green to Four Winds Field for two games, beginning with Thursday’s matchup at 7:35 p.m. ET. Cubs right-hander Erick Leal (4.96 ERA) will toe the rubber.
