Warsaw Sports Wrap – April 22
The Warsaw girls tennis team notched its first win of the season Wednesday night.
The host Tigers got a pair of singles wins in edging past Northridge 3-2 in Northern Lakes Conference play.
Freshmen Colette Smith and Liza Lewis each won in singles action to pace the Tigers.
Smith topped Taylor Sellers 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Lewis posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Chae Kieper at No. 3 singles.
The third point for the winners came at No. 2 doubles. The team of Sydney Hartman and Athena Schlitt defeated Kenzie Kauffman and Vanessa Raber 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
Northridge claimed points at No. 1 singles as Kylie Frauhiger beat Ella Knight 6-3, 6-0 and at No. 1 doubles where the team of Kenzie Martin and Emily Hughes topped Camille Kerlin and Rosie Fleming 6-3, 6-2.
Warsaw is now 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the NLC on the season.
The Tigers won the junior varsity match 4-2. Winning for Warsaw in singles play were Grace Miller, Libby Jenkins and Julie Frazetta. Also winning was the doubles team of Jenn Katris and Sophia Parke.
Warsaw will host Fairfield today.
Baseball Squad Tops Goshen
The Warsaw baseball team evened its conference mark with a 5-4 home win over Goshen Wednesday night.
The Tigers plated three runs in the home half of the sixth inning to post the win. Goshen had scored single runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth to build a 4-2 lead.
Marselo Rodriguez had a strong game at the plate to lead the winners. Rodriguez had three hits, including a double, scored two runs and drove in one.
Kevin Hawley, the starting pitcher for the Tigers, had a hit, a run scored and an RBI.
Ryan Marshall and Isaac Lemon each had a hit and an RBI for the Tigers.
Justin Kerschner picked up the pitching win in relief for Warsaw.
Warsaw improves to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the NLC.
The Warsaw junior varsity team topped Goshen 10-1. Alex Miller and Jordan Steffensmeier each had a home run for the JV Tigers, who are now 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the NLC.
Luke Baker and Bryce Sensibaugh each had three hits and Collin Marshall two for Warsaw. Braxton Tennant picked up the pitching win.
Warsaw host conference foe Plymouth on Friday evening.
