WINONA LAKE – Jumping off the bridges over the canal in Winona may seem fun, but it will get you a $50 fine after the matter was discussed at Tuesdays Winona Lake town council meeting.
With temperatures rising the water has proven to be an inviting place to cool off. However, jumping off the bridges is obviously “A huge liability” Winona Lake Police Chief Joe Hawn said.
Concerns with people jumping off the bridges along the canal has been an ongoing issue for about two years.
The council voted to approve a $50 fine for those who are caught attempting to jump or who have jumped into the canal from bridges, now known as the “unlawful use of bridges” ordinance.
At Tuesday’s meeting, the council also approved plans for the demolition of the vacant Collier’s building to be carried out by SiteWorx.
The building at 2499 E. Winona Ave, just west of the via-duct will be removed to make room for the roundabout that will be constructed and revamp the entrance to the town.
The demolition of the building will cost just over $20,000 and is set to begin soon.
Town engineer Aaron Carl is finished with the design of a parking lot that will be located on the other side of the road from the section of parking by The Boathouse Restaurant. The lot is expected to be a bit wider than the opposing side. Along with this, a new pickleball court and path have been finalized for the park.
