WARSAW — State Rep. Dave Wolkins recently issued a statement on remembering and honoring fallen service members.

“Memorial Day is a solemn time of remembrance for the more than 1.1 million Americans who gave their lives serving our nation in uniform,” said Wolkins. “While we can never fully repay the debt owed to those who died protecting our freedom, we can remember and honor all who have served and sacrificed for our liberties.

Although some traditional Memorial Day activities will not take place this year, we will still come together as a nation to recognize these brave heroes and their families. Whether participating in the American Legion’s virtual Memorial Day, paying respect at the graves of local veterans, visiting a nearby memorial, learning about history or helping someone, we can challenge ourselves to observe Memorial Day and honor its significance.

Indiana has a rich and proud history of Hoosiers serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. To learn more about Hoosier heroes, past and present, the American Legion’s ‘Sacred Places‘ list highlights several museums, memorials and cemeteries across the state that are dedicated to our military.

Hoosiers can also honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice through the National Moment of Remembrance, held at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day. At that time on Monday, May 25, everyone is asked to keep silent for one minute as an act of symbolic unity and to pay tribute to Americans who died in the pursuit of freedom and peace.

This Memorial Day, please join me in reflecting upon the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives in service to this nation, and take a moment to acknowledge others who lost a loved one in the line of duty.”
