Smith To Replace Hamstra In Warsaw Athletic Office

Roman Smith has been chosen to take over as assistant athletic director at Warsaw Community High School.

WARSAW – While Warsaw Community High School is largely quiet these days, the athletic department made an announcement Monday afternoon.

In accordance with WCHS assistant athletic director Jeff Hamstra announcing he is preparing to take the position of athletic director at Chesterton High School, Warsaw found Hamstra’s replacement.

Lakeland High School athletic director Roman Smith has been tabbed to take over in the Warsaw athletic office as assistant to athletic director Matt Binkerd. Smith comes to Warsaw after a three-year stint as athletic director at Lakeland. While in LaGrange, he also served as tennis and basketball commissioner for the Northeast Corner Conference.

Smith earned his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Trine University. While at Trine University Smith was a multi-sport athlete, competing in football and track and field. He earned his Masters of Arts in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University – Irvine.

“I am extremely honored and excited to be joining one of the most prestigious school districts and athletic departments in the state of Indiana,” Smith said. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to come alongside Mr. Binkerd and the leaders of WCHS to ensure student success in the classroom and on the fields of play.

“Athletics can serve as an amazing platform to prepare and equip individuals for life after high school,” continued Smith. “We want to take advantage of that. I am looking forward to building relationships with administration, student-athletes, coaches, and members of the community while adding value to an irresistible atmosphere and department. It’s a great feeling to be a Tiger!”

Smith will transition into the office in June for Hamstra, who is set to become Chesterton’s athletic director on July 1. The hire is pending Warsaw Community School’s board approval.
