
TIPPECANOE VALLEY 3, NORTH JUDSON 2
The Vikings fought back from being down two match points to one to win their first meet of the season in a home-opener in Akron Thursday.
Payton Mills was last off the court and fought leg cramps to win a first set tiebreaker and a 6-4 second set at 1 singles, putting his team over the top. Both Valley doubles teams were victorious as Russ Paxton and Ethan Hartman won a three-setter, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, at 1 doubles, and Owen Kirchenstein and Annakin Pettit won 7-5, 6-1 at 2 doubles.
Dylan Neese battled in a close, 6-4, 7-5 loss at 2 singles, and Connor Frentzel also battled but was defeated 6-0, 6-2 at 3 singles.
In JV play, Hunter Craft and Cooper Walls bounced back after their defeats in singles play to win 8-4 in a doubles match. Evan Harsh showed improvement, but was defeated.
Valley tennis will be back in action at Peru Tuesday at 5 p.m.
ROCHESTER 3, TRITON 2
Just a day after winning their opener, the Trojans fell to visiting Rochester in an ultra-close, 3-2 meet Thursday evening.
Quin Stesiak’s 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Gavin Greer at 3 singles gave the Zebras their third match point and the team win. Cole McKinney and Chandler Westafer pulled off their three-setter — which included two tiebreaks — over Brock Beehler and Kane Lutz, 7-6(2), 5-7, 7-6(6), in 2 doubles play, while Connor Large’s 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kyle Reinartz gave Triton its other match point of the night.
Jared Bules and Tyler Heckaman fell in an extended two-setter, 7-6(2), 7-5, at the 1 doubles position, while John Gardner suffered a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Grant McCarter at the top singles position.
Triton’s JV also fell on all five courts.
The Trojans slip to an even 1-1, while Rochester opens at 1-0. Triton will host conference and sectional foe LaVille at 4:30 p.m. next Tuesday.
PLYMOUTH 5, WAWASEE 0
Wawasee fell on all five courts in its Northern Lakes Conference-opener with visiting Plymouth Thursday.
Holden Babb’s 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 loss to Nic Bagley was the Warriors’ most competitive score of the night. Jack Gibbon took six games from Bennett Christy at 3 singles but fell 6-2, 6-4, and Zach Leedy won a trio of games versus Grant Houin at 1 singles but succumbed 6-1, 6-2.
Grant Brooks and Blaine Baut lost 6-2, 6-0 to Drew Harrell and Adam Hunter at 1 doubles, and Colin Rhoades and Zeke Keim were swept 6-0, 6-0 by Liam Fort and Hugh Smith at 2 doubs.
The junior varsity Warriors lost on three of four courts, meanwhile. Jay Duncan was the lone JV winner for Wawasee.
The Warriors dip to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in NLC play. They’ll play on the road at Central Noble next Tuesday.
NORTHWOOD 3, JIMTOWN 2
A win at one doubles helped put NorthWood over on Jimtown at the NorthWood courts.
Jack Wysong and Landon Holland had to go three sets with Preston Phillips and Lucas Flick, but put together a 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 win to seal the team win.
Wes Troyer and Ben Vincent collected the other two wins for the Panthers, both scoring one and two wins at one and two singles, respectively, against Matt Margraf and Bill Pawlak.
Jimtown claimed wins at three singles and two doubles. Beau Kaler produced a four and three triumph over Chase Horner and the duo of Sam Wort and Christian Vanderwerf claimed a two and three win against Bryce Harner and Treyton Martin.
NorthWood (2-0) works again Saturday at the DeKalb Invite.
