KOSCIUSKO — The United Way of Kosciusko County held a children’s book drive over the summer as its “Big Give” project.

The organization set a goal of gathering 6,000 gently used children’s books, with more than 30 local businesses helping out by setting up donation tubs. However, the project exceeded expectations, as more than 11,000 books were collected.

“It’s really cool and neat to see all of this generosity,” said volunteer Jo Azary. “It’s amazing to see that and also the number of people willing to volunteer and help out.”

More than 40 members of the Zimmer Biomet Young Professionals Network volunteered at the distribution event Thursday, Aug. 23. They spent four hours cleaning books, sorting them by age category, and packaging them for distribution.

Darren Bickel, president of the United Way of Kosciusko County, said the generosity of the community has astounded him.

“So many companies were enthusiastic about helping us with our book drive,” said Bickel.

He also mentioned that one donor brought 500 books to a business participating in the drive.

The children’s books will be distributed to 20 area organizations, including licensed child cares, United Way Community Partners waiting rooms and parenting programs. Non-profit organizations such as The Beaman Home and Fellowship Missions will also receive books.

Rose Home and All Things New will also establish book places with the help of United Way.

“We want to further establish more opportunities for kids to be exposed to reading around the community,” said Bickel.
