Naomi WinterNaomi E. Winter, 96, of Goshen, Ind., died Tuesday evening, Jan. 29, 2013, at Greencroft Healthcare, Goshen.

She was born May 18, 1916, in New Carlisle, Ohio, to Elmer D. and Ruth H. (Lutz) Mast. She married Chester B. Winter, June 27, 1940, in Elkhart, Ind. He preceded her in death in 1985.

A lifelong educator, she graduated from North Central College, Naperville, Ill., and received her master’s degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind. She taught English at Northwest, John Marshall and Crispus Attucks high schools, before retiring in 1981 as head of the English Department for the Indianapolis Public Schools.

She is survived by her children: Jane (John) Modesitt of Syracuse, Ind.; James (Sandra) Winter, Monticello, Ind.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen. A second visitation will take place from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Shirley Brothers Funeral Home, 2377 E. Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN. Reverend David Herr of Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse, will officiate. Entombment will follow at Washington Park East, Indianapolis.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Indianapolis Symphonic Orchestra.
