SYRACUSE — At 9:41 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, Turkey Creek Fire Territory was called to a residential structure fire at 203 W. Boston St., Syracuse. The caller reported flames on the second floor of the wood-framed structure, which was built in the 1920s. All occupants were reportedly evacuated from the house at the time of the initial call.

When firefighters arrived, they reported to dispatch that smoke could be seen from the second floor. Shortly after the first report, it was added that smoke and flames could be seen in two different locations on the second floor.

Milford and North-Webster Tippecanoe Township fire departments were called for additional manpower. Pierceton Fire was called to standby status for Tippecanoe Township. NIPSCO also was called to the scene to cut power to the residence.

At 9:55 a.m., the fire was deemed under control. According to Mickey Scott, fire chief for Turkey Creek Fire Territory, damage from the fire was contained to the second floor. Scott also reported that damages to the structure and contents are estimated at up to $10,000, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The American Red Cross was called in to assist the occupants at the scene with temporary living arrangements.

While a truck from Tippecanoe Township did appear at the scene, firefighters from Milford were en route when they were recalled and instructed to go to standby at approximately 9:59 a.m. Syracuse Police Department also assisted at the scene. Lutheran EMS was placed on standby during the event.

The house, which, according to Kosciusko County records, is owned by Lowell T. Johnson, and was occupied by Nakita Campbell.

Turkey Creek Fire Territory cleared the scene at 11:10 a.m. There were no injuries to firefighters.
