Concord Claims Tennis Regional Crown, Panther Pair Win

Concord SportsDUNLAP – It was more home cooking for the Concord boys tennis team Wednesday night.

The host Minutemen, playing on their recently redone home courts, beat Jimtown 4-1 to claim the Concord Regional championship.

Concord advances to face No. 2 Indianapolis North Central on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Homestead Semistate. The Minutemen sit at 15-2, while North Central is 18-1.

The Minutemen got wins from Will Boyer and Nate Slabach at the top of its their singles lineup to turn back the Jimmies.

Senior Boyer defeated Holden Price 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 and Slabach topped Ben Clarke 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2.

The Minutemen also took both doubles matches. The duo of Caleb Whitaker and Travis Hermon beat Andrew Emeigh and Tim Gardner 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 action. The team of Drew McDougle and Jacob Shetterly stopped Nate Behrens and Preston Philips by a 6-3, 6-4 count at No. 2.

Jimtown got its point from Austin Pearison at No. 3 as he defeated Freddy Buckingham 6-1, 6-1.

The Jimmies finish at 19-5 and say good-bye to longtime coach Steve Fledderman, who is retiring after 37 seasons in charge of the program.

Concord claims the 10th regional crown in program history and its first since 2013.

The NorthWood doubles team of Brant Mast and Jared Hoffman continued their season Wednesday night. The pair, competing in the No. 1 doubles sectional tourney for teams unbeaten in postseason play, topped the Bethany Christian team of Dustin Miller and Jonathan Yousey 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Mast and Hoffman will play for a doubles sectional title at Concord Thursday at 5 p.m. They will face the Angola team of Spencer Griffin and Eric Nafziger for the right to advance in the tourney.
