basketballGOSHEN – Kyle Mangas knows a thing or two about winning championships.

The former Warsaw basketball star added yet another one to his already outstanding hoops career Thursday night.

Team Mangas, which featured Kyle and older brother Jake, captured the championship of the 19-30 division in the title game of the Elkhart County Fair’s annual 3-on-3 tournament.

Kyle Mangas led the Tigers to a Northern Lakes Conference championship, its third straight, and a Class 4-A sectional crown (its second in a row) during his senior season in 2016-17. He averaged 22.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game to earn the Ink Free News Player of the Year honor for the second straight season. The star guard finished his outstanding prep career fourth all-time in program history with 1,450 career points and was an Indiana All-Star.

Mangas, who is headed to play at Indiana Wesleyan University, teamed with brother Jake, along with Tanner Balazs and Grant Smith to beat Team Gingrich 18-14 in the championship contest.

Jake Mangas, who now attends Indiana University, played basketball and football at WCHS. Balazs was a standout in both football and track and also played baseball at WCHS. Smith, a 6-6 forward from Connersville, was also an Indiana All-Star and will also play at Indiana Wesleyan.

The Warsaw program also was well represented in the dunk contest as former Tiger Rashaan Jackson claimed the title. Jackson was the second leading scorer for Warsaw during his senior season in 2014-15, helping coach Doug Ogle’s team go 18-5 overall and 7-0 in the NLC. Jackson, a 6-3 forward, currently plays at IUSB.

Jackson scored 65 points on his three dunks to top a field of eight slammers. Bryant Robinson of Goshen was second with a score of 57 points, while Smith finished third and Will Line, who plays for Goshen, fourth.

The Wawasee boys basketball program also showed off its talent Thursday night.

Team A Miller edged past Team S Miller 21-19 to win the 16-18 age division title. Trevor Coleman, the leading scorer for the Warriors this past season, hit a 3-pointer to give his team the championship.  The championship team also featured Austin Miller, LaShaun Morris and Aaron Evans from the Wawasee program.

The Warrior team beat a squad comprised of Line, along with Fairfield players Luke Stephens, Shandon Miller and Skylar Mast in the title game.

The Northridge foursome of Kelsey Brickner, Marci Miller, Melinda Bpntrager and Kelsey Miller rolled to the title in the girls’ 16-over division. The quartet of Raider graduates helped their team go 28-2 during the 2016-17 season and win Class 4-A sectional and regional championships along the way.

Bryce Willard, who plays at Fairfield, won the 3-point shooting contest. Willard drained a dozen treys in one minute to beat out 15 other shooters for the title.
