‘Cinderella’ Is Perfect For Family Outing
WARSAW — Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” is on stage at the Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts in Warsaw for the next two weekends. While the plot is well known, it has been updated. It’s different. There are surprises.
But, it’s still “Cinderella” and there are still glass slippers.
There’s singing. There’s dancing. The characters are charming. They are witty. It’s totally enchanting.
The story most of us remember from our childhood days is all there. However, they have added a few new twists and turns to the musical. For example when Cinderella loses her slipper as she leaves the ball, she hurries back to pick it up and take it with her.
Jackey Good is Ella (Cinderella). Jeremy Seiner is Prince Topher. Both turn in superior performances. Their voices blend to perfection in such numbers as “Ten Minutes Ago,” “A Loneliness of Evening” and “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?”
Hats off to Mike Yocum who has been on the Wagon Wheel stage since 1983. A Winona Lake resident, he is a professor of communication and director of the theatre program at Grace Collage. He plays the part of Sebastian, the conniving guy who has been running the kingdom while the young prince has been attending school. He rules without regard for the lower class and believes he should control the prince and continue to rule the kingdom.
Krisen Yasenchak is Marie, a woman in rags. She is also Cinderella’s fairy godmother and works her magic throughout the performance, not only for the ball but for the banquet as well. Yasenchak is perfect and such numbers as “Fol-De-Rol,” “Impossible” and ”There’s Music in You,” are audience favorites.
Cinderella’s stepmother and stepsisters are great, Each adds something special to the production.
Catherine DeLuce is Madame, the stepmother, who added the Cinder to Ella’s name because she was often covered with ashes from the fireplace. Gabrielle isn’t a bad stepsister. She’s in love and shares secrets with Ella. Ellen Jenders turns in a first-rate performance as the woman whose mother pushes her toward being the prince’s bride. Kira Lace Hawkins is Charlotte, the sister who does everything she can to catch to eye of the prince. She really wants to be the next queen. Hawkins is brilliant and funny.
Matthew Janisse is Jean-Michel. He’s out to save the poor people who have lost their homes to Sebastian’s cunning ways. He also has an eye on Gabrielle and brings her flowers and a book, both of which she accepts but her mother rejects.
Matt Casey is Lord Pinkleton, who is the right hand man to both Sebastian and the prince. And, hats off to director and choreographer Scott Michaels who also plays the part of the giant in the opening scenes.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the members of ensembles who add much to the musical as they sing and dance to the delight of the audience. Members of the adult ensemble are Jason Brown, John Cardenas, Jennifer Crews, Say Dixon, Jennnifer Dow, Haley Schafer and Laurie Sutton. Members of the youth ensemble and Isabelle Awald, Josh Fisher, Alek Fehlmann, Brielle Fehlmann, Briley Gargis, William Robison, Sydney Trump and Sophie Schlitt.
“Cinderella” will be on stage weekends through Dec. 20. For information or tickets call (574) 267-8041 or online at wagonwheelcenter.org.
