CULVER – Job number one has been checked off the list for the Triton volleyball team.

Triton used a pair of key runs in the first and second games to shut down Oregon-Davis 25-15, 25-21, 25-15 Tuesday night to move to the semi-finals of the Culver Volleyball Sectional.
Tied at 12-all in the first game, Triton rattled off five straight points to take command. In the middle of the run was Jaela Meister’s thunder. The same scenario unfolded in the second game, where Oregon-Davis led 17-16, only for Meister to get going again, pounding home kill after kill as Triton would pull away and not look back.
Meister had six kills in each of the first two games and 17 overall, her final one the final nail in the coffin as the Lady Trojans (17-13) will advance to play in Saturday’s game one against South Central (Union Mills), also 17-13, in what should be a whale of a contest.
“She is the go-to, she is smart, she reads the floor well,” Triton head coach Samantha Willsey said of Meister, who added six digs and an ace. “She has so many options as an attacker. And she’ll put the ball away when we need her to.”

Triton wasn’t just Meister and everyone watching. Key contributors included Brooklyn Bitting, who had six kills and three blocks and made some key plays in game one. Courtney Jennings had two blocks in a row in game three, which ended a Bobcat rally in game three, which Triton then turned into a 4-0 run to take a 20-11 lead. Jennings also added five kills and a dig.
Nicole Sechrist had 11 kills, three digs and an ace, Quinn Downing had 11 digs, Hannah Wanemacher hoisted 26 assists and dug eight tries, and Emma Ross added four digs and an ace.
“I’ve seen my middles start to improve and peak at the right time,” Willsey said. “Tonight I was hoping to see what would happen with Jaela and Nikki as the outsides. I know my middles are there when I need them to be, and I look forward to using them soon.”
“My defense is great, and Quinn is the best libero I’ve seen in a long time,” Willsey said of key players needed for Saturday’s showdown. “Our defense has been slow and we were on our heels tonight. But I do know they have it in them to play good defense.”
The Culver Sectional will resume Thursday with LaCrosse and host Culver Community starting at 6 p.m. with North Miami and Argos meeting in game two. The Thursday winners will play in Saturday’s second game. The championship at Culver is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
