CULVER – Sometimes, all it takes is one.

Triton’s volleyball team, which hadn’t won a game on the road all season, finally got over the hump and then some in a 3-0 sweep at Culver Thursday night.

Triton raced out to a 25-9 in game one and never looked back in a varsity contest that took just over an hour to complete. Triton completed the carousel with a 25-16, 25-13 closeout.

Offensively, Triton looked much better Thursday night than in its previous two nights, having also played Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Both Jaela Meister and Nicole Sechrist took good swings against a Culver defense that didn’t clog up the net much in blocking assignments. Meister finished the night leading the club with nine kills while Sechrist ended with six kills.

Triton, however, didn’t need to take as many swings as Culver made error after error in both serve receive and passing. The lack of flow in game play seemed to calm down coach Samantha Willsey’s crew, especially in the rapid first game.

“It really was a matter of internalizing their confidence,” stated Willsey. “I kept telling them, don’t let confidence depend on how you are playing the game. Be confident in how you are playing. We started out the game confident and maintained it. I think that was our key tonight.”

Defensively, Triton were much more solid than in past contests. The Lady Trojans had just one serve receive error the entire night and had Quinn Downing led the team in digs (10), which helped Hannah Wanemacher send up 11 assists. Downing also added five aces, to which Triton had a staggering 14 overall.

“The needed a confidence boost tonight, and coming into tonight they were upbeat and feeling good,” Willsey said. “We still needed to stay mentally tough, stay fast and get some runs going.

“Last night we started well and had no pressure, then got out of rhythm and fell apart. A game like this, we also had little pressure and we stayed focused. That was good to see.”

The Triton JV also were impressive in a 25-19, 25-17 victory over Culver.

The Lady Trojans move to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference. Up next is a Saturday morning matchup in the HNAC with West Central.
