WARSAW – Basketball rims in Warsaw city parks have been temporarily put out of commission to prohibit anyone from using the courts during the state emergency over COVID-19.

City officials received complaints about people continuing to use the courts despite calls for social distancing.

The parks remain open, but activity is banned at playgrounds and courts.

At Richardson-Dubois Park, rims were adjusted Tuesday by securing two pieces of wood across the rims, making it impossible to successfully make a shot.

The wood was used because removing the rims attached to glass backboards is more complicated than on traditional backboards used outdoors.

Mayor Joe Thallemer announced the change in policy at a news conference Wednesday morning, April 8.

The whole idea is to avoid congregations. Thallemer pointed out that it’s hard to play basketball and stay six feet apart to respect social distancing.

“I just hate doing that. This is Indiana. This is basketball. It’s a way people get out and let off some steam. It’s just one of the harsh realities of where we are right now,” Thallemer said.
