WARSAW — Four-time Boston Marathon and New York City Marathon winner Bill Rodgers will visit Warsaw Community Schools at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the Warsaw Community High School Performing Arts Center.
Rodgers will talk with all WCS fifth-grade students about his record-setting marathon experiences while inspiring students to run toward dreams of their own.
Rodgers is best known for his victories in the Boston Marathon and the New York City marathon in the late 1970s. He won both races four times each between 1975 and 1980, twice breaking the American record at Boston with a time of 2:09:55 in1975 and a 2:09:27 in 1979. In 1977, Rodgers won the Fukuoka Marathon, making him the only runner ever to hold the championship of all three major marathons at the same time.
Rodgers’ presentation will conclude with a mile-long run alongside all attending fifth-grade students to the newly constructed Student Activity Center where officials will celebrate the facility’s new grand opening.
“Warsaw Community Schools holds a tradition of bringing in historic speakers each year to encourage students to dream about their future,” said WCS Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert. “Past speakers have included 9-11 photographer Thomas Franklin, United States civil rights pioneers, astronauts and many others. This year WCS is excited to welcome Bill Rodgers.”
