Wawasee’s boys tennis team got off to a strong start with a convincing win over host Lakeland Wednesday night.
Zach Leedy claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win over Corey Christie at 1 singles, Grant Brooks and Blaine Baut combined for a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Colton Fleeman and Tommy Curtis at 1 doubles, and Colin Rhoades and Zeke Keim did likewise in their 2 doubs match with Brayden Miles and Dominic Lawrence.
Jack Gibbon trumped Blake Studirant in his first match for Wawasee, beating his Lakeland 3 singles counterpart, 7-5, 6-1, and Holden Babb outlasted Luke Franke in a three-setter at 2 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Devon Kuhn and Taylor Fidieke both earned 8-0 wins for the Warrior JV, meanwhile.
Wawasee opens at 1-0 and will begin Northern Lakes Conference play at home against Plymouth Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
WARSAW 3, HUNTINGTON NORTH 2
Warsaw won on both doubles courts and in a super-competitive 3 singles match to beat out Huntington North on the road Wednesday.
Zachary Nicholas and Tristan Anderson defeated Noah Zahn and Isaac Eckert in a close match at 1 doubles, 7-6, 6-4, while Michael Ray and Wil Boren topped Jacob Daughtry and Reid Eckert, 6-3, 6-1 at 2 doubles, and Hayden Anderson emerged victorious from his 3 singles battle with Matthew Weill, 7-6, 7-5, to give the visiting Tigers the win.
Caleb William fell in straight, 6-0 sets to Carson Kitchen at 1 singles, and Trey Williams succumbed to Thomas Schweller, 6-1, 6-0 at 2 singles in Huntington North’s two wins.
Warsaw’s JV split 3-3 with its hosts, meanwhile. Harrison Lewis, Nick Boren and Jack Reed all collected wins for the JV Tigers.
Warsaw opens at 1-0 and will host Penn in its home-opener Thursday at 5 p.m.
BREMEN 5, TIPPECANOE VALLEY 0
Tippecanoe Valley tennis lost its opener at Bremen Wednesday.
Payton Mills came up short in his 1 singles match with Mark Bahr, 6-4, 6-1, and Connor Frentzel lost another 4 and 1 match with Dawson Hickman at 3 singles in the closest scores of the night. Dylan Neese fell 6-1, 6-1 to Carsen Miller at 2 singles, while Russell Paxton and Ethan Hartman were shut out, 0 and 0 in their 1 doubles match, and Owen Kirchenstein and Annakin Pettit fell likewise in their 2 doubles match with Brett Yelaska and Mariano DeLeon.
The junior varsity Vikings also fell short of a win in their three matches at the meet.
Valley opens at 0-1 and will look to bounce back opposite North Judson-San Pierre at home in Akron Thursday at 5:15 p.m.
