MISHAWAKA 9, WAWASEE 3
Wawasee baseball dropped its fourth straight after a hot 6-1 start to the season with a lopsided loss to visiting Mishawaka Tuesday night.

The Warriors jumped on top with two runs in the bottom of the first but couldn’t hold on in the loss as the Cavemen capitalized on 10 walks in the win.

Josh Slabaugh took the loss on the hill, giving up three earned runs off five hits and four walks in four innings of work. Tony Garcia lasted just 1 1/3 innings in relief, surrendering three walks and two hits for four earned runs, and Grant Brooks slowed the bleeding in the sixth, giving up two hits and three walks for two earned runs closing it out.

Kameron Salazar stayed hot at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, but he was the only Warrior with multiple hits.

Sam Shively got the win for Mishawaka, surrendering three hits and two walks for two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Ryan Watt closed for the Cavemen, giving up three hits and two walks for one earned run by the Warriors, who struck out 11 times in the loss.

Mishawaka improves to 10-2 overall. Wawasee dips to 6-5 and will travel to Plymouth for a Northern Lakes Conference game Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Also Tuesday, Wawasee’s JV earned a convincing, 12-2 win over Bethany Christian. Jacob Meek was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Gavin Wilson finished 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI to lead the JV Warriors at the plate.

Carr Reinhard lasted three innings on the hill, giving up one hit with three strikeouts for two earned runs. Zach Smith struck out two on his way to two shutout innings pitched.

Wawasee’s JV improves to 6-3.

TIPPECANOE VALLEY 11, CULVER MILITARY ACADEMY 4
Tanner Trippiedi went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs, and the Vikings shelled CMA at home in Akron Tuesday.

Lucas Walters and Payton Mills added two hits apiece, and Harry Johnston got the ‘W’ on the mound, giving up four hits and one walk with two strikeouts for no runs in 2 2/3 innings pitched in relief of starter Ethan Yates, who left in the fourth after a shaky start that saw the Eagles plate four runs — only one earned — in the top of the first.

Valley scored three runs in both the third and fourth innings, then plated four during a big fifth to break the game wide open.

The Vikings improved to 6-2. They will host Northfield in a Three Rivers Conference game Wednesday at 5 p.m.

MARIAN 10, GRACE 3
Despite tallying the same number of hits, Grace’s baseball team was handled by Marian 10-3 on Tuesday in a single nine-inning game.

Both the Lancers (13-23, 9-15 Crossroads League) and the Knights amassed 12 hits in the game. But Marian was efficient with a six-run inning to pull away. Overall, Grace left 12 baserunners stranded against the Knights (23-17, 15-9 CL).

The game started evenly with the score 3-3 after four innings. Marian put three runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first, and Grace quickly tied the score.

Houston Haney had an RBI single in the bottom of the first, and Xavier Harris drove in two runs with a single in the second inning.

But in the top of the fifth, the game shifted to Marian for good. The Knights plated six runs, five of which came with two outs, to claim a commanding 9-3 edge.

Although Grace consistently reached base, the Lancers were unable to cross home plate after the second inning. Grace most notably came up empty on a bases-loaded situation in the eighth inning.

Jaron Mullett hit 3 for 4 with two runs from the leadoff position, and Jacob Sapp was 3 for 4 with a double.

Harris drove in two runs, and Ethan Brooks was 1 for 4 with a run scored.

Scottie Clark was strong as a relief pitcher, allowing one run over three innings pitched, and Ike Peterson tossed a clean inning in relief.

The Lancers end the Crossroads League season this weekend at home with a three-game series against Goshen. Friday’s single game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. with the doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
