Updates On Construction Projects Given

Wawasee School Corp WSC 2014 IconSYRACUSE — During the regular monthly meeting of the Wawasee school board Tuesday, the board was given an update on construction projects by James Flecker, school corporation attorney.

At the site of the new Syracuse Elementary School, the cafeteria floor has been poured and the roof over the cafeteria has been started. The gym floor has been prepped. Three knock boxes, which are used to hold keys for the fire department, EMS and police, will be installed after the Turkey Creek Fire Territory approves the locations.

Work continues on installing the geothermal loop field and the boiler room bearing walls are complete.

At Wawasee High School, most of the demolition work has been completed. Metal stud framing has been installed in the technology center and the tiers have been installed in the band room.

At Milford School, new floors have been poured in the kitchen, cafeteria and freezer. Basketball hoops have been installed in the gym. New lines have been painted on the track and masonry has been installed in the serving area and kitchen/outdoor storage.

New fuel tanks have been set at the bus garage and new electrical and piping for the fuel pumps has been roughed-in.

Other agenda items included:

• WRWT 93.7 Warrior Radio broadcasted from the Syracuse Lake fireworks show.

• Kathy Myers, government teacher at Wawasee High School, was nominated to the Indiana Supreme Court workshop in August.

• WHS Key Club attended an international convention in Atlanta.

• The Warrior logo is finished on the outer wall at the high school near the main entrance. It was stained, not painted, by David Butler.

• The board approved 2016-17 school lunch prices at $3.50 for adults, $1.70 for students in grades K-5 and $1.90 for grades 6-12.

• The board approved the mileage reimbursement rate at 50 cents per mile for 2016-17, down from 53 cents last year.

• A new WHS athletic trainer agreement was approved with KCH Lutheran Health Network.

• Personnel changes approved include Kim Umbaugh as a new Wawasee Middle School secretary, Pamela Miller as the cafeteria manager at the high school and Dee Blair as a technology department secretary at WHS.

• New teacher orientation is scheduled for Aug. 1-5.

• The rescore window for spring 2016 ISTEP+ results is open until Aug. 12.

• Textbook rental fees for 2016-17 are $121.25 for kindergarten and the same for grades one through three. Grade four is $121.65 and grade five is $115.95. Fees have increased since last year due to the electronic devices students will have.

• There will be some shuffling of teachers at Milford School including Jennifer Szynal from grade five math teacher to third grade teacher, Kerri Warstler from grade four to grade five math teacher, Emily Worrell from grade four to kindergarten, Katie Young from kindergarten to grade two teacher, Mary Brower from grades five and six science teacher to instruction coach and Cherie Sweatland from grade three to grades five and six science teacher. Rachel Voelkel will be a physical education teacher at Milford School.

• Matt Pulley will be a technology coach at North Webster Elementary and Jared Knipper will transfer from Syracuse Elementary kindergarten teacher to instruction coach.
