Whitko SportsNEW CASTLE – Former Whitko High School star Steve Nicodemus has been named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s 2016 Silver Anniversary men’s team.

Nicodemus, who led the Wildcats to the Final Four of the state tournament in 1991, is one of 18 players named to the team announced today.

Nicodemus scored 755 points in his senior season at Whitko, where he played for Hall of Fame coach Bill Patrick. He finished his high school career with 1,474 points, which was the school record until being broken by current Grace College player Logan Irwin.

Nicodemus led the Wildcats to a 17-9 mark during the 1990-91 campaign. Whitko won the Columbia City Sectional title, the Fort Wayne Regional crown and then defeated LaPorte and Marion to win the South Bend Semistate championship. The Wildcats lost 83-53 in the state semifinal contest to Gary Roosevelt, which was led by Mr. Basketball Glenn Robinson. Roosevelt went on to defeat Indiana Brebeuf for the state title in 1991.

Nicodemus earned the prestigious Trester Award for Mental Attitude in 1991. He then went on to play at Michigan State.

The Silver Anniversary team also features a pair of former Elkhart County stars in Daimon Beathea and Jeff Massey.

Beathea played at Elkhart Memorial before moving on to Michigan State. He coached at Ancilla, Dayton and Wisconsin-Green Bay before forming and coaching the Elkhart Express to two titles in the International Basketball League.

Massey starred at Concord High School and then collegiately at Xavier. Massey is currently an assistant coach at Toledo after coaching at Owens Community College, Robert Morris and St. Bonaventure.

The group of 18 players features Robinson (Gary Roosevelt) and Alan Henderson (Indianapolis Brebeuf). They finished 1-2 in Mr. Basketball voting that year, led their teams to the state championship game, earned first-team All-American honors at Purdue and Indiana, respectively, and then had long careers in the NBA.

In all, 13 Indiana All-Stars from 1991 are on the Silver team, along with five other seniors from that season.

The team also includes Lance Barker (Columbus East), Brandon Brantley (Andrean), Brian Evans (Terre Haute South), Andy Elkins (Evansville Bosse), Tony Etchison (Noblesville), Marlon Fleming (Southport), Jerry Freshwater (Marion), Chad Gilbert (Charlestown), LaMar Morton (Muncie South), Andre Owens (South Bend Riley), LaSalle Thompson III (Pike), Chris Wilburn (Martinsville) and Jason Williams (Pike).
