Area Teams All Bounced From Semi-states

IHSAA SportsThe remainder of the area participants in the IHSAA volleyball state tournament were defeated Saturday in the various class tournaments around the northern half of Indiana.

In Class 4-A, Elkhart Memorial’s season came to an end in a 25-16, 25-19, 25-21 loss to Fort Wayne Carroll in the morning session at Plymouth. Memorial would finish 26-8 this season. Carroll (34-3) would advance to the state finals in a 3-1 win over Hamilton Southeastern in the final. HSE got to the night game after beating Crown Point, 3-2, in the second morning semi-final.

On the bottom half of the 4-A bracket, state and national No. 1-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral had little trouble beating Floyd Central 3-0 in the semi-final, but had to win 15-10 in the fifth game to get past Center Grove in the Seymour Semi-state final. Center Grove beat Avon in the morning and had Cathedral down 2-1 before the top-ranked Irish (35-3) rallied to earn a spot opposite Carroll in next week’s championship.

In Class 3-A, South Bend St. Joe’s season came to a halt after a 3-0 loss to Leo at the Twin Lakes Semi-state. St. Joe closes at 33-5. Yorktown (38-1), the top-ranked team in 3-A, bested New Prairie 3-0 in the other semi-final and would sweep Leo 3-0 to reach the championship game.

Providence (36-3) will represent the south in 3-A after beating Chatard 3-0 and Northview 3-0. Northview defeated semi-state host Jasper 3-1 in the morning’s first match.

In Class 2-A, Rochester knocked off Westview 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 at the Bremen Semi-state. Westview closes its season 30-6. Wapahani won the day’s first matchup 3-0 against Bishop Noll. In the final, Wapahani (23-11) fended off Rochester 25-15, 24-26, 25-15, 25-18 to return to the state finals. Rochester’s magical season comes to an end at 36-2.

At South Decatur, Speedway (27-9) won the two matches necessary to make the state finals, knocking off Henryville 3-1 and Union County 3-2. Barr-Reeve, the highest-ranked team left in the 2-A tournament at No. 3, lost to Union County 3-0 in the semi-finals.

In Class 1-A, the top two ranked teams will meet after No. 1 Lafayette Central Catholic and No. 2 Christian Academy both won its two matches.

LCC (39-0) defeated Seton Catholic 3-0 and Fort Wayne Blackhawk 3-1 while the Academy (28-6) beat Tindley 3-0 and Indianapolis Lutheran 3-0. Blackhawk (29-4) got past Pioneer (27-11) for the second time this year, 3-1, in the north semi-final while Lutheran made the south final by beating host Loogootee 3-0.
