MENTONE — Scouts armed with wire brushes and scrapers arrived in Mentone Thursday evening, Sept. 17, to do some serious cleaning.

Burket Boy Scout Troop 782 spent about two hours scraping and cleaning the town’s historic cannon, which is undergoing restoration. According to Mentone Town Council President, Tim Croy, the cannon’s wheels are undergoing repairs off-site. Thursday evening’s cleaning session prepared the cannon for a new paint job.

The project earned the scouts two hours of community service credit, which they need as they advance through the different Boy Scout levels. Croy noted that the cannon has been an ongoing project for about two years.
