Crossings Closed For Several Weeks
SYRACUSE — A number of motorist who travel the eastern portion of the county, in the Lake Wawasee area, have voiced concern and disapproval of the numerous railroad crossings closed from Syracuse to Cromwell.
Contact was made with CSX inquiring about the crossing work.
According to Gail Lobin, CSX Corporate Communications, work at the SR 13 crossing in Syracuse started Monday, Aug. 3, and is expected to be completed over the next several weeks. The crossing at SR 5 in Cromwell will be closed for similar work later this month.
Lobin did not address the closure of closures on county roads, such as East Wawasee Drive, Kosciusko/Noble County Line Road, Bishop Road, Warner Road and others.
Her correspondence stated: “Safety is CSX’s highest priority and maintaining railroad infrastructure is critical to minimizing service disruptions and preventing accidents and injuries. CSX has been working with state and local officials to coordinate this effort which includes crossing replacements and surface upgrades. We are working to reduce impacts in the area and we apologize for any disruptions and inconvenience to area residents as we complete this work as safely as possible.
“We encourage residents to call (800) 232-0144 to report safety and service issues. The number is staffed 24 hours a day. Our Public Safety Center can respond to rail disruptions and emergencies and work with local authorities when issues arise.”
