Wawasee SportsSoftball Gets Back On Track

After a very rough go lately, Wawasee’s softball team righted the ship, at least a little Thursday. Wawasee’s offense woke up, scoring enough to get by Elkhart Memorial, 12-10, in Northern Lakes Conference softball in Syracuse.

Kylee Rostochak broke out of her funk, ripping four hits – including a pair of doubles – and drove in two. Meghan Fretz added two hits, drove in three and scored three times. Kayla White was also effective, driving in two runs and cracking two hits.

Wawasee had only scored seven runs in its last four games and were 1-3 in those contests, including a two-game losing streak in the NLC.

The Lady Warriors (16-5, 9-2 NLC) broke a 4-4 tie with five runs in the fourth, only for Memorial to tie the game at nine in the sixth. Wawasee scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on in the seventh. The two teams combined for 27 hits.

Memorial touched up Fretz for 12 hits and drew five walks, and Gabby Warner hit a homer, tripled and drove in three runs in Fretz’s least consistent outing of the season. Luckily for Fretz, Wawasee tattooed Anderson for 15 hits and used three big innings to post the victory.

The JV game between Wawasee and Memorial had just six hits, but Wawasee scored plenty in an 8-2 win. Wawasee had just three hits, but drew five walks and benefitted from six Memorial errors. Katie Avery doubled and scored twice to lead the Lady Warriors.

Wawasee will visit Plymouth Friday.

Baseball Walked-Off Again

For the fifth time in the last three weeks, Wawasee has had heartbreak in the final inning of a varsity baseball game.

Elkhart Memorial became the latest team to pick up a walk-off win against the Warriors, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 7-6 win Thursday evening in Elkhart.

Wawasee has lost four of its Northern Lakes Conference games by one run, and all of them encountered the opponent scoring in its final inning of play. Memorial saw a three-run lead evaporate in the seventh when Wawasee rallied to tie the game at six, only for the Chargers to plate a run in the bottom half.

Caleb Dingeldein had a big hit for Wawasee, a two-run single, and Aaron Beer added a double and stolen base for the Warriors.

Wawasee, which also lost to Fort Wayne Concordia in the Cadets’ final at-bat last weekend, now sit at 7-11 overall and 2-9 in the NLC.

The JV from Wawasee had a good night at the plate in a 6-5 win over Memorial. Jamie Slabaugh had three hits, scored twice and also picked up the win on the mound. Tim Conley and Jairus Boyer each had two hits and combined for three runs scored, and Jaxon Coy added a single and run.

Wawasee will host Plymouth Friday afternoon.
