Dear Editor,

I have had the privilege to be apart of the Lincoln school district for seven years now. I have served six of those years on the Lincoln Elementary PTO. I have seen the struggles that the students and the staff face in this deteriorating facility everyday.

One of my biggest concerns is the safety for my children and the other children at Lincoln as well. We have three portable classroom trailers that are used since there is no more room inside the school. The electrical is so outdated that if too many things get plugged in, the electrical outlets will shoot out sparks. Closets have been turned into small remediation rooms and old bathrooms have been capped off and turned into storage areas. There is literally no where to house the growing population around the Lincoln community.

Although we have these issues at Lincoln, we have a very dedicated staff at Lincoln. The staff goes above and beyond to serve the needs of these kids and they work very hard to make sure the students do their very best. There are so many great things I can tell you about Lincoln. The staff cares very deeply about the students. The school is very important to our community. So many great things have happened inside our school. We are a nationally recognized title one school. Our teachers were a big part of bringing feed my starving children to Warsaw and above all, they just care very deeply for their students. I get to witness it every day.

I’ve heard several people say that buildings don’t make the education, and they are right. Our Lincoln staff is amazing at what they do and they are taking care of our kids to the best of their ability. However, why should our students be at a disadvantage compared to other schools within the district? Especially when it comes to technology because our outdated electrical can’t handle the type of technology the other schools have? Why shouldn’t our teachers have the room and resources they need to efficiently do their job? And why should parents have to worry about their children in unsafe areas that are used at Lincoln such as the classroom portables?

Our children deserve a better learning atmosphere. These kids are our future and when you invest your time, talents, and money into our future it equals a smart community investment.

Vote yes on Tuesday, May 5, to keep Lincoln in our area.
