SOUTH BEND – South Bend Cubs catcher/first baseman Cael Brockmeyer has been named the Midwest League Player of the Week by MiLB.com staff, the league announced Monday afternoon.

“Any time you get named player of the week in any league, it’s definitely a good honor,” Brockmeyer said. “It’s good to see people noticing all your hard work and coming to fruition and seeing it pay off. Just gotta keep it going, get some wins going for the team these next few weeks and keep it rolling.”

Brockmeyer, who has split time at catcher and first base through 11 games for the Cubs, leads the league in hits (16), extra-base hits (seven) and total bases (25), is tied for first in doubles (six), ranks second in both slugging percentage (.694) and on-base percentage (.524) and checks in at third in batting average (.444).

“My swing has been feeling good these first couple weeks here in South Bend,” Brockmeyer said. “I worked pretty hard on it this offseason, into spring training and developed some routines during spring training with some of the coaches that I think have helped my swing to keep it going smooth and through the zone. I’ve just brought that here and have been seeing some good pitches, getting my hit spot out in front and putting some good swings on the ball.”

Brockmeyer claims the league’s first honor of the season, while Cedar Rapids right-hander Felix Jorge nabbed the league’s Pitcher of the Week recognition.

Brockmeyer clubbed a walk-off home run on Opening Night on April 9, when South Bend topped Bowling Green, 2-1.

“That’s an honor that anybody should be grateful to receive,” Cubs manager Jimmy Gonzalez said. “He’s been doing it. You see all the hits he’s gotten. He’s smoking the ball. They’re not just singles. They’re extra-base hits, the clutch home run in game one, lots of doubles and driving in runs. He’s a presence at the plate. When he gets up there, we expect good things to happen because he’s hot right now. So hopefully he can continue riding that.”
