Dear Editor,

I recently read an article posted by InkFreeNews.com about a young man named Caleb Owens. Owens is running for mayor of Elkhart as a high school senior, and I could not be more ecstatic and inspired by his courage. I realize and understand that Owens will have more than enough doubters and naysayers, as he is just now on the verge of adulthood. However, I am here to say that I fully support and am encouraged by Owens’ leap of faith.

I understand that as mayor of Elkhart, Mr. Owens will have oversight of the county’s police, fire, education, and transportation departments, as well as many other tedious responsibilities. The thought of this role being obtained by only an eighteen year old would undoubtedly make townspeople uneasy.

With confidence from his peers paired with guidance from his more experienced elders, Owens can adequately serve as an effective Mayor. The biggest set-back that Mr. Owens may have is his inexperience with politics and government; clearly, as he is only eighteen years old. The argument that he is inadequate in any other department is out of the question, as he clearly holds the leadership skills, and is very well educated. Not to mention he is extremely eager to serve Elkhart County in a positively influential way.

Owens plans to “focus on the real problems” in Elkhart County, which is always a powerful mission statement. He also believes he does not need extensive political experience to be a strong leader. I could not agree more. With an inexperienced eighteen year old, the political corruptness can be avoided. Instead, the eagerness of leading, and appetite for his people’s welfare can in turn take over the mindset and tactics of young Owens.

If Owens can focus on the “real problems” within Elkhart County, stand as a well-grounded leader and act as a sponge to elderly guidance, he can adequately serve as Elkhart County’s youngest mayor.

Whether or not Owens is chosen come election time, it does not matter. He has stood up, and done something not many eighteen year old kids have the courage to do. He has influenced and encouraged thousands of aspiring teens, as well as adults. The future is bright for Mr. Owens, I wish him the best of luck, and I encourage him to keep inspiring the youth.

Respectfully,

Warsaw Community High School Junior
