The sixth annual Wawasee Kiwanis Soup Supper featured “one of the best turnouts we’ve ever had,” according to the event’s chairperson Elaine Pearson.
“I’d like to rename this event the ‘Taste of Syracuse,’ because we have so many talented cooks (contributing their soups)” she added, referencing the 22 delicious varieties offered at the event.
The soups were divided into three entry types: businesses, individuals and restaurants. Diners paid $6 each for unlimited samples of the different entries, or at least until their crockpots of choice ran dry. Drinks and deserts also were available for an additional donation.

Proceeds from the event go toward the Wawasee Kiwanis’ various local service programs, including the local food pantry, projects in the local schools, Riley Hospital and helping local families in particular need.
“The Kiwanis’ mission is caring for children,” Pearson said. “We are focused on serving our community and children in need through our various projects.”
Prior to beginning the soup supper tradition, the group sponsored a chili supper. Pearson is thrilled with the new format and believes that it grows in popularity each year. Last year, after expenses, the Kiwanians raised $600-700 according to Pearson’s recollection. She is confident with this year’s higher turnout that that number will be even greater.

Plaques were handed out to the winners in each of the three categories, plus one for the overall top vote getter. This year’s winners included the Sleepy Owl in the business category with their “Sausage Sauerkraut Soup”; Lakes Area Players in the business category with a “Loaded Baked Potato Soup”; and Tom Hoover in the individual category with his “Turkey Soup.” The overall winner was the Channel Marker restaurant with their “Clam Chowder” offering.
