Beginning at 9 p.m. EDT tonight, residents are asked to “shine a light” for New Carlisle Fire Department Assistant Chief Jamie Middlebrook. Middlebrook, 41, was killed Tuesday night in a large industrial fire in LaPorte County.
A “Lights On” (turn your porch light on) event has been established to honor Middlebrook’s memory and support his family and department. Syracuse and other area fire departments are asking residents to honor the firefighter by turning on a porch light tonight.
Middlebrook joined several fire departments in battling a massive fire Tuesday night at K-Fex, an excavating and septic business. Fire investigators said a roof collapsed during the fire and trapped three firefighters. One was able to escape unassisted and a second suffered leg injuries and was rescued.
Visitation for Middlebrook is from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Bethel College in Mishawaka. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, also at the college. Burial will follow in New Carlisle Cemetery.
