Wawasee Sports Wrap – May 10
Golfers Fall Back At Homestead
Wawasee didn’t post the score it had hoped, or even averaged in previous invitationals in landing in eighth place with a 340 at the Homestead Invitational played at Orchard Ridge Golf Club.
In the previous four 18-hole events Wawasee took part in this season, the Warriors averaged a 327. That score would have landed Wawasee in third Saturday, but still well off the mark of Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger’s winning 303 score. Northridge were second at 326 and Culver Academy third at 328.
Jeffrey Moore led Wawasee with an 83, Tristen Atwood an 84, Mason Germonprez an 86, Rasmus Rich an 87 and Cal Heinisch a 92. All five of Wawasee’s golfers posted a nine-hole mark of 44, four of which shooting the score on the back nine, Moore’s coming on the front side. Moore rallied with a 39 on the back nine to salvage his round.
“We really did not play very well today,” said Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “It was a nice day to play and we didn’t take advantage of it. About the only thing you can say is that we were consistent, everybody on the team had one nine-hole score at 44.”
Wawasee will participate in a triangular Monday at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club with Penn and LaVille.
Lady Warriors Split At Eastside Classic
It was a long but valuable day for Wawasee softball at the Eastside Classic. In Saturday’s first game, Wawasee held off a very talented Bremen team, 6-4, in nine innings while the host Eastside team sent Wawasee home after a 5-1 result in game two.
Wawasee looked like it was in good shape against Bremen, leading 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Bremen, however, put two runners on via walks, then with two outs, Sabrina Gilley drove in both with a single.
The combination of two errors along with a single from Kylee Rostochak and double by Meghan Fretz brought home two runs in the top of the ninth to win the game for Wawasee.
Fretz, Rostochak and Paige Hlutke all had three hits for the Lady Warriors.
The combination of starter Amber Lemberg and reliever Fretz gave up six hits and walked nine, but struck out 11 Lady Lions.
Ashton Miller was a wrecking crew for Eastside in game two, smacking three doubles and driving in two at the plate. In the circle, Miller struck out 10 and allowed just five hits.
Lemberg worked all seven innings for Wawasee, giving up nine hits and three earned, striking out six.
Alli Ousley had an RBI double in the only offensive result for the Lady Warriors, which settle at 14-7 overall after the two-game showcase.
Wawasee returns to action Monday in hosting Northern Lakes Conference rival NorthWood.
Concordia Offers Rude Wake-Up Call
A huge third inning for Fort Wayne Concordia was the difference in an 8-1 final over Wawasee in varsity baseball played Saturday morning in Syracuse.
The Cadets scored seven runs in the third and posted 13 hits overall to break Wawasee’s modest three-game win streak.
Wawasee (7-11) managed just six hits against Concordia, led by two singles from Nate Prescott and an RBI single from Brett Carson.
Patrick Navarro was saddled with the loss, not getting out of the third inning. Navarro gave up six earned runs, two walks and struck out two before being lifted with two outs in the third.
Wawasee’s JV swung the sticks with purpose in a 12-2 win against Concordia on the farm.
Aaron Beer had three hits, including two doubles, to lead Wawasee. Sam Rookstool had a triple, Chase Rookstool and Harrison Shortill both doubled and Caleb Dingeldein had two hits in the Wawasee onslaught.
The Warriors move to 9-4 overall with the win.
The baseball varsity and JV will head to Nappanee Monday afternoon to take on the NorthWood Panthers.
