Wawasee Sports Wrap – May 8
The NorthWood girls tennis team was as hot as the newfound heat of Thursday’s 90-degree temperatures. The Lady Panthers swept all five of the varsity courts and all but one of the junior varsity courts in an eclipse of Wawasee in Syracuse.
The doubles teams from NorthWood lost just one game combined in leading the team while the singles courts were just as good.
The two doubles team of Alaina Donegan and Madison Sheline swept Marte Tverra and Charity Parker love and love while Tori Schwartz and Kennedy Walter beat Addison Ayres and Jaclyn Miller love and one on the one doubles grid.
Sydney Wysong at one singles and Hannah Walter at three singles had matching results in their victories, beating Katy Ashpole and Chelsea Carolus by 6-0, 6-1 scores.
Megan Reed was pushed by Jada Antonides on the two singles court but prevailed 7-5, 6-4.
Winning JV singles courts for the Lady Panthers were Kaitlyn Swihart, Taylor Luster, Audra Graber and Yadira Figueroa while the teaming of Mikayla Bley and Jama Rice as well as Bailey Miller and Betsy Mikel persevered on the JV doubles courts. Wawasee’s pairing of Brooke Fick and Kaitlin Kuhn bested Morgan Jenkins and Katie Troyer, 8-6, in a pro set.
Wawasee falls to 2-8 overall and 0-6 in the Northern Lakes Conference, its next matches coming Saturday with the varsity at the Angola Invite and then wrapping up the NLC season Monday at Plymouth. The NLC tournament begins Wednesday at Warsaw.
Warriors Need Extras To Trump Chargers
Wawasee’s C-Team baseball outfit needed extra innings, but prevailed 14-13 against Elkhart Memorial Thursday in Syracuse.
Gavin Bontrager paced Wawasee with two hits and three RBIs and was also the winning pitcher. Rylan Kuhn and Tim Conley added RBI singles and Gavin Barker chipped in a single, double and two RBIs for the Warriors.
Wawasee (4-2-1 overall) will get back at it Tuesday at Goshen.
