An argument which began on Facebook ended with two teenagers injured in an early Monday morning stabbing in Syracuse.

Information on the altercation has been sent to the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s office and county probation department for possible charges of battery resulting in serious bodily injury and aggravated assault. Potential other charges may be added.

Injured was a 16-year-old female from North Webster, who suffered a stab wound to the upper chest. The injury also broke a rib and punctured a lung. She was taken to IU Health Goshen for treatment.

The second injured individual is a 17-year-old Syracuse female who suffered a cut above her left eye and a fractured left eye socket. She was taken by private vehicle to Kosciusko Community Hospital for treatment.

Syracuse Police were called to a residence just north of the town limits at 1:34 a.m. Monday in reference to a female suffering from a stab wound to the chest. The first officer found the 16-year-old sitting on the couch and having difficulty breathing. Turkey Creek/Syracuse Fire Department paramedics were called and transported the juvenile to the hospital. Her mother was contacted and notified of the situation.

Through their investigation, police learned the 16-year-old, who was allegedly visiting the residence where she was found, had been arguing with the 17-year-old on an undisclosed topic on Facebook. The two agreed to meet at the Syracuse skate park.

Statements from parties involved unraveled the story. The 16-year-old and another female friend walked to the skate park to meet the older girl to settle the argument. When the pair arrived in the area, they saw a vehicle, which belonged to the boyfriend of the 17-year-old girl.

Information from the victims and witnesses stated the two females exchanged words and began fighting, with the boyfriend allegedly breaking up the fight after approximately five minutes. No one allegedly knew of the stabbing until after the parties had separated and were leaving the park.

During the investigation, one of the witnesses said she heard a click and one of the victims say, “don’t burn me.” The witness thought a lighter had been lit. She also told police she did not realize her friend had been stabbed until they were a short distance from the park, but continued to walk to her residence over a mile away.

The witness also said the other female became weaker and by the time they reached the entrance to the residence, she could no longer walk.

It was during their initial investigation authorities were notified a second victim had been taken to KCH by her father and had suffered a laceration.

The second victim told police she was attacked by two females at a local business, but did not recognize them and could only give a vague description.

However, based on her actions, police felt they were not receiving true information and also informed the victim they would be checking the video surveillance where the attack allegedly took place. At that point the victim told police collaborating information to what had been received, and gave additional details.

The 17-year-old said she did have a pocket knife in her possession at the time of the fight, but did not intend to use it. She allegedly also said she did not mean for the knife to open and was not aware the stabbing had occurred. Police were told that the knife was in the possession of her boyfriend.

Collaborating information was obtained from the boyfriend and the weapon was recovered.

From the boyfriend, police also learned the 17-year-old girl had the knife when she entered his vehicle, but told him she intended to use it to make her hand harder. While describing what took place during the fight, he reportedly said he did see the open knife in his girlfriend’s hand and observed her point it forward, just prior to him separating the two.

He added he believes the younger victim had already been stabbed, although he did not notice any injury. He said he did hear the younger victim say they needed to go because she was bleeding.
