Ruth M. ‘Maxine’ Hughes, 91, of Syracuse, Ind., passed away at 2:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Millers Merry Manor in Warsaw, Ind.
She was born on Oct. 11, 1922, in Plymouth, Ind., to J. D. and Bessie M. (Crist) Leiter. She attended Mentone Public Schools and moved to Syracuse in 1942 from Warsaw. She was married on Jan. 12, 1942, in LaPorte, Ind., to Guy W. Warner who preceded her in death and then on Nov. 28, 1971, in Syracuse she married Harold H. (Jesse) Hughes who preceded her on June 18, 2007.
She formerly worked for Syracuse Rubber Company for 16 years and also was a self employed cleaning lady for many years. She enjoyed working in her yard and gardening.
She was survived by a daughter: Laura L. Warner, Syracuse; three sons: Larry D. Warner, Mesquite, NM.; James R. Warner, Calif.; and Richard A. (Pam) Warner, Middleburg, Fla.; a grandson; two great-grandson; several step grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren; two sisters: Phyllis Forbes, Wabash, Ind.; and Norma Moyer, Akron, Ind.; and two brothers: Richard Leiter, Warsaw, Ind.; and David (Jackie) Leiter, Mentone, Ind.
She was preceded by her parents; both husbands; and a brother: Robert Leiter.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at the funeral home with Pastor Brad Cox of the Wawasee Lakeside Chapel officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Syracuse.
