Plymouth Spikes Wawasee

The hot streak by Wawasee volleyball came to a screeching halt Thursday in a big way at Plymouth. After winning its last eight matches, Wawasee were silenced by Plymouth 25-18, 27-25, 25-15 in the Northern Lakes Conference opener for both programs.

Wawasee (9-2, 0-1 NLC) were again without senior outside hitter Lydia Katsaropoulos, still bothered by a neck injury suffered before the Lakeland game in week two. Forging ahead, Kasey Napier had 10 digs and four aces, Alli Ousley 20 assists and Hunter Gaerte eight kills to lead the Lady Warriors. Jada Antonides added a season-high 10 digs.

“What happened tonight matters a lot less than how we respond,” said Wawasee head coach Jeff Phillips, whose club will have a week off before hosting NLC rival Goshen next Thursday. “How do we recognize our errors and fix them for Goshen. It’s one match that didn’t go our way, nothing more.”

Wawasee continued to battle, but fall in three-match games, this time to Plymouth 25-17, 18-25, 10-15 in JV matters.

Ashley Beer had a nice night defensively, digging 17 attempts and serving up two aces for Wawasee, now 6-4 on the year. Tia Long added 15 assists and three kills.

Warriors Show Fight, Come Up Short

Concord has owned the boys tennis matchups with Wawasee in recent years, but the Warriors closed the gap just a bit Thursday in a 4-1 loss in Syracuse.

The one doubles team of Dylan Houser and Chase Myers moved to 6-1 on the season after beating Aaron Allend and Mitch Boyer 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to claim the only court win for Wawasee.

The one singles court also went to three sets, won by Nick Pollack 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 over Kyler Love.

Bernardo Cadana beat Todd Hauser one and love at two singles while Jared Searer claimed a one and four win at three singles over Cal Heinisch. Concord closed out its tallies with a four and one win by the two doubles pairing of Riley Huffer and Mitch Lozier, beating Jake Hutchinson and Doug Hapner.

Wawasee would take three wins at JV, led by a 6-2, 6-4 win by Luke Smith against Brandon Fish. Trevor Haessig would take an 8-6 result on Alex Diaz and Leonard Kline and Nate Haines earned a 9-8 final on Tate Nicason and Brandon Pletcher.

Wawasee (4-3, 0-2 NLC) will next take part in Saturday’s Wawasee Duals.

Offense Sputters In Another Shutout Loss

Wawasee’s offensive woes in girls soccer continued Thursday night at Argos, losing 2-0. The Lady Warriors (0-6) have scored just one goal in the six contests and have not found the back of the net in its last four games.

Argos scored in the 36 minute then tacked on the insurance with four minutes left in the match. Goal scorers for the Lady Dragons were not reported.

“We continue to play solid defense while our offensive effort needs to improve,” said Wawasee head coach Doug Heinisch. “We are making progress. Much better passing and effort to move under control than the previous game. If we can consistently pass the ball, we can be a formidable opponent.”

Wawasee will look to break the silence when it hosts Goshen Saturday morning.

Warriors Avoid The Sweep

After a pair of tough losses on the gridiron last week, Wawasee finally found some success against South Bend St. Joseph’s.

Needing two overtime periods, Wawasee was finally able to claim a win against St. Joe, 26-18, in freshman football played at Wawasee. Statistics were not provided from the game.

Wawasee moves to 2-0 on the freshman campaign and will host Northridge next Thursday.
