South Bend native and Notre Dame basketball star Skylar Diggins will represent the U.S. in the 3 X 3 World Championships.
Skylar Diggins will once again don the red, white and blue to represent her country in international basketball competition.

Diggins, the former South Bend Washington hoops superstar and current Notre Dame senior, was chosen for the USA Basketball 3 X 3 National Team Sunday night. Diggins will compete in the inaugural FIBA 3 X 3 World Championships Aug. 23-26 in Athens, Greece.

Diggins, an All-American who led the Irish to their second straight  runner-up finish in the NCAA Tournament this past season, was selected Sunday at the conclusion of the 2012 USA Basketball 3 X 3 National Team Training Camp/Tournament held at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Diggins will be joined on the USA National Team by Bria  Hartley of Connecticut, Chiney Ogwumike of Stanford and Alyssa Thomas of Maryland. Their team won the gold medal game of the Tournament Sunday 21-10 as Diggins and Thomas each scored seven points.

Diggins has earned four gold medals in the past as a member of various USA Basketball teams in international competition. The star guard was Indiana’s Miss Basketball and the National High School Player of the Year in 2009 and led Washington to the State Finals four straight years.

The World Championships, which is slated to be held every other year,  will be a 24-team event. There will be four groups of six teams with each playing the other five during round-robin play. The top four teams in each group advance to the medal round.
