SYRACUSE — Monday’s meeting of the Turkey Creek Fire Territory Executive Board involved bids for paving and cosmetic work on the township’s fire stations and a clarification by President Kimberly Cates about fundraising efforts to help pay for exercise equipment for the department.
Fire Chief Mickey Scott presented the three bids he received for paving the east and south lots of Station 1 and completing the paving around Station 2. Phend & Brown Inc. submitted the lowest bid at $66,778.20. Last week the township board approved $86,000 for the projects, based upon costs anticipated at that time.
The paving bid will be packaged with bids for other projects to be done for the town, lowering costs for all phases of the work. “The thought is the contractor will already have their equipment in the area,” Scott said.
Performance bonds, however, will be purchased separately for the township and town projects.
The board directed Scott to notify the contractor of the bid approval and arrange to satisfy bond requirements.
One quote was received for improving the exterior appearance of Station 1 in Syracuse.
As the work is merely cosmetic and there is pending architectural work on the station, the board recommended delaying the painting until the architect finishes its work.
Cates addressed the misconception the department was required to hold fundraisers to help defray the costs of new fitness equipment.
“The agreement was we were going to do it, look at all the options and write a check,” she explained. “Buying the equipment was not contingent on the (K21 Foundation) grant or fundraising. We already voted to buy the equipment.”
In other business, Scott reported:
• The railroad crossing at SR 13 (Huntington Street) will be closed from 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, through 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, depending on the intervening weather.
• Scott will complete the job description for a new position akin to assistant chief and deliver it to board members in the next couple weeks.
• Last month the fire department responded to 163 calls (22 fire and 141 EMS), 47 more than in June.
• The department received delivery of its new grass and brush truck. The 2015 vehicle replaces the department’s 1998 model. The truck will be used for grass and brush fires and otherwise inaccessible off-road rescues, towing the rescue boat and plowing snow.
• Year-to-date budget expenditures are well under projections. With more than half the year elapsed, less than 40 percent of budget funds have been spent. Only two line items exceeded the pro rata amounts, due to purchase of a new software system and related expenditures.
• The department received $109,293.85 for billable EMS runs for the first six months of 2015, averaging 34 percent more than the national average revenue per run.
• The department has advertised for bids for a 2016 ambulance to replace the current 2002 model pursuant to the replacement schedule.
• The annual Firefighter MDA Fill-the-Boot Drive is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the intersection of South Huntington Street and Pickwick Drive.
The board will next meet at 6:45 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at Syracuse Town Hall.
