NEW YORK — The leading scorer in Goshen College men’s basketball history took home his share of a million-dollar pot on Sunday.
Errick McCollum II, who scored 2,789 points and earned NAIA All-American status during a four-year career at Goshen College from 2006-10, scored 15 points as his Overseas Elite team claimed the championship of The Basketball Tournament in a 67-65 win over Team 23.
The win was Overseas Elite’s seventh in the past 16 days, beating out 96 other teams from across the country to claim the tournament crown.
More than 300 teams entered the tournament, with 24 teams in each of four regions selected by online voting and joined by the defending champion Notre Dame Fighting Alumni. Those teams played a seven-round, single-elimination, five-on-five basketball tournament. The winning team split 95 percent of the $1,000,000 prize, with the remaining 5 percent going to its fans; the losing teams earned nothing.
In the semifinals Saturday afternoon, McCollum posted 15 points in an 84-71 win over City of Gods, setting his final tournament average at 19.7 points per game.
Many of the players in The Tournament hailed from Division I institutions: in the same backcourt as McCollum was Myck Kabongo, who played at the University of Texas. The rosters of the two teams in the final comprised 18 players: 15 had D-1 playing experience, while the remaining two played their college ball at the Division II level.
McCollum earned $125,000, according to the winning shares determined by the team and posted to the tournament website. ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla dubbed him “a guy who can get you buckets.” McCollum finished the 2014-15 season as the leading scorer in the Chinese Basketball Association with nearly 40 points per game. His single-game high of 82 points was the most in the world this year.
In the five seasons since he graduated, McCollum has played professional basketball in Israel, Greece, China, and (in 2014) with the Denver Nuggets summer-league team. With Panionios of Greece in 2013-14 and Zheijang of China in 2014-15, he led the league in scoring.
