MENTONE — Wrecker services, town employees and police policies were all major topics of discussion at the regular meeting of the Mentone Town Council Monday evening, Aug. 3.

Council member Jill Gross noted that there had been a formal complaint registered against the Mentone Police Department and that the complaint was being investigated.

“We’ve asked for a response from the officers involved,” she said.

There was a brief verbal dispute between Town Marshal Jim Eads and council member Shelly Krueger over who is responsible for adoption of a new police department policy. Kruger handed out a copy of Silver Lake’s policy, stating she had gained permission for Mentone to adopt it as its own. However, Eads had reservations about some of the contents of the policy and expressed that the felt he was being left out of the process.

In the end, the decision was made to set the policy aside for review.

Gross noted she had received a phone call from Crouse Body Shop Inc. expressing interest in being added to the town’s rotation of wrecker services. The council voted to invite Crouse, along with Glen’s Wrecker Service Inc. and Reichert & Knepp Wrecker Service, which the town already uses, to the next council meeting to discuss a potential rotation between the three of them.

Josh Shepard of the street department was also present and requested that part-time employee Doug Bailey be upgraded to full-time status, with the possibility of adding a third employee in the future. This came after an employee left the department last month. The board approved the change, beginning with the next pay period.

Gross also pointed out a date change for the next council meeting, which has been moved to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, in observance of Labor Day.
