Samuel Jay “Sam” Barkman, age 61, of Wolcottville, passed away at home at 3:05 a.m. Wednesday July 1, 2015, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on April 7, 1954, in Topeka, the son of Monroe and Lena (Wagler) Barkman. On Aug. 11, 2001 he married Rose Farmwald; she survives.
Also surviving are his children: Brittany Rochelle Barkman; and Blake Alan Barkman, Wolcottville; his father: Monroe Barkman, Topeka; two brothers: William Barkman, Topeka; and Monroe (Rachel) Barkman Jr., Ligonier; five sisters: Mary Jane (Wilbur) Miller, Middlebury; Waneta (John) Miller; Ann (Toby) Troyer; Carolyn (Dave) Nissley; Norma Jean (Fritz) Bontrager, all of Topeka.
He was preceded in death by his mother; two brothers: John Allen Barkman; and Ray Ellis Barkman; two sisters: Alma Mae Barkman; and Martha Schmucker.
Sam was a member of Eden Worship Center in Honeyville. He worked 27 years at Redman in Topeka, and then spent the last two years working for Cruiser RV in Howe. When he wasn’t at work, he was farming at home. Sam enjoyed being outdoors, and especially loved fishing and hunting with his son Blake. They were inseparable.
A funeral service will be held in Sam’s honor at 10 a.m. Tuesday July 7, at Eden Worship Center, Topeka. Pastor Matt Gingerich will officiate. Burial will follow at Eden Cemetery in Topeka.
Family and friends will be received at Eden Worship Center from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday July 5, and also from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday July 6, In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to his children, Brittany and Blake Barkman.
