Elkhart soldier picture found

An Elkhart woman found an old photo of a World War II soldier in her yard several months ago, and has now managed to find the family of the man in it.

Jenny Austin found the picture just laying in the front yard of her apartment.

“It’s like it just fell out of the sky,” said Austin.

She and a family friend, Charles Phillips, decided the man or his family should get the photo back, so they put it on Facebook. They were soon contacted by Teri Miller, who has the exact same photo in her house.

The man in the photo is Miller’s father, Ned Wilcox. He was a soldier in World War II and an Elkhart City Police officer for decades after. He passed away in 1977.

Miller has no idea how the photo arrived in Austin’s front yard, as no family has lived near the apartment complex for at least 40 years. But the discovery came at a time when it was most needed for her.

Miller recently lost both her mother and brother. She believes the photo is her father sending her a message.

“I’m taking care of mom and brother,” is what Miller thinks her father is saying to her.
