Mildred Marie Smith, 94, of Akron, Ind., passed away at 9:43 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2012, at Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, Ind.

She was born Sept. 23, 1917, in Fulton County, Ind., to Charles E. and Dolly Blanche (Rogers) Towne. On Oct. 6, 1940, she married Ned J. Smith, in Akron. He passed away May 26, 2005.

Mildred was a homemaker. She was a graduate of Richland Center High School, a member of the former Famous Akron Jonah Club. Mildred and her husband were honorary members of the board of the Prill School Museum.

She is survived by two daughters: Marilyn (Asa) Brofford, Akron; Janet (Jerry) Vigar, Akron; two sons: J. Duane Smith, Rochester, Ind.; and Lynn (Kay) Smith, Akron; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son: Lyle Dean Smith; a brother: Otis Towne; a sister: Betty Rose.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron. Services will follow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Phillip Pratt officiating. Burial will follow at Athens Cemetery, Athens, Ind.
