An estimated 1.9 million women are physically assaulted in the United States each year, and women are significantly more likely than men to be injured during an assault, according to a survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice.

That is all the more reason women should take advantage of the Women’s Self-Defense Class from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 23. This class is offered by the North Webster Community Public Library in conjunction with the North Webster Community Center.

In this hands-on class, women ages 12 and older will learn how to stay safe and protect themselves.  The class is taught by Brian Gagye, a former U.S. Marine and police officer with experience as a martial arts instructor.

Current owner of Special O.P.S. K-9 Academy in North Webster, Mr. Gagye teaches his students how to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations and what to do if attacked.

To sign up for the Women’s Self-Defense Class, register at the North Webster Community Center office no later than June 18.  A $10 class fee is due when you register. Students under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This class is designed for women of all ages, so encourage your mothers, daughters, sisters and friends to participate. It could save their lives.

On a lighter note, Preschool Story Time starts up again next week on Tuesday, June 19, and will be offered every Tuesday morning through July 31 (except July 3).  Preschool children will enjoy a story read by Mrs. Pam, finger plays, songs, magnet board stories, and crafts.  A choice of two time sessions will be available at 10:30 or 11:30 a.m. For a fun time of learning, register your child prior to June 19 at the Youth Services Desk.

Registration for the June 29 Friday Family Food and Fun begins June 15. The June 29 session’s theme will be “camping” with crafts and snacks. Speaking of snacks, teens are invited to participate in the Teen Taste Test on Thursday, June 21 at 2:30 p.m. when they will be evaluating the tastiest cookies and milk.
