Come “Howl at the Moon with a Hero Tune” with singer and musician Tom Sieling 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, as he kicks off the summer reading program with a concert full of fun and humorous children’s songs. A widely acclaimed singer and songwriter, Sieling engages his audience with lots of movement and participation as he accompanies himself on guitar, banjo, harmonica, and drum machine in this free family event. Although open to everyone, if your child is signed up for the summer reading program, be sure they bring along their reading passports to be stamped for extra reading credit.
Youth summer reading clubs start Monday, June 1, so be sure to sign the kids up and keep them reading and learning all summer long. Reading clubs are available for infants through high school with prizes earned for every five hours of reading completed along with special events and activities each week. Details and a schedule of summer events are available at the Youth Services Desk.
The library is going to the dogs 1:30 p.m. till 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 4, during Paws-to-Read when Echo, a registered therapy dog, comes to the library to be read to. Children, ages 5-12, can sign up for 15 minute sessions to read aloud to this canine book lover. Echo loves to be read to while the kids can practice their reading skills. Four sessions are available by appointment and registration is required. Appointments can be made starting Monday, June 1, at the Youth Services Desk or call (574) 834-7122 ext. 202.
Later that day at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 4, teens in grades six through high school can catch a free flick at teen movie time. Showing is an American superhero film about a teenager who is bit by a genetically-altered spider and gains superhuman strength and spider-like abilities. The movie is rated PG-13 and runs 121 minutes. Teens can bring beverages and munch on the free popcorn.
The week’s activities end with make it and take it day on Friday, June 5. Crafts will be available all day in the Youth Department. Kids can make the crafts at the library or take them home to complete.
While the Youth Department buzzes with activity, adults will be learning how to meditate and relax their bodies, minds, and spirits during the guided meditation class at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 3. Instructor Pirkko Miller will guide participants through the techniques of meditation. She is a retired registered nurse and has practiced and taught meditation for many years. The benefits have been well documented and include lower stress levels, increased energy, and greater sense of well-being, among other advantages. This new monthly class will be offered the first Wednesday of each month. The class is free, but pre-registration is required each month. You can sign up at the Front Desk or call (574) 834-7122.
Adults will have their craft time 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 4, when they sign up for the make and take card class. Instructor Jan Biehl will show you how to make your own original greeting cards. The $7 class fee includes all materials and supplies, and pre-registration is needed.
