Wawasee SportsSYRACUSE – The clash of conference champions went to Wawasee Friday night.

The host Warriors defeated Class 2-A No. 5 Bremen by a 6-1 count in the regular-season finale.

Wawasee, winners of the Northern Lakes Conference title, bested the Lions, who won the Northern State Conference championship.

The Warriors used a four-run fifth inning to take the victory.

Meghan Fretz homered and drove in three runs for the winners.

Alissa Flores also had a home run for the Warriors. Madi Wilson was 2-3 and scored two runs for Wawasee.

Danielle Gunkel was 3-4 at the plate and scored a run. Gunkel also earned the pitching win with a complete game with four strikeouts.

Wawasee (20-5) will play the winner of the Fairfield-Tippecanoe Valley game on Tuesday night at 5 p.m. in a semifinal game in the Lakeland Sectional.  Fairfield and Valley play Monday in the sectional opener at 10 a.m.

The Wawasee junior varsity team topped Bremen 16-4 to improve to 11-9. The JV Warriors play Saturday in their own invitational.
