As part of their sixth grade experience with economies, the sixth graders at Triton Elementary School created their own “push-cart” business.

They then opened a special market on Friday, May 15th and invited students from the other grades to shop at their businesses. Many young entrepreneurs were born.

This is the 21st year of The Novel Study “The Pushcart Wars.” It is also the 50th anniversary of the book.

During this study the selected sixth grade students participated in a PBL class for eight weeks and learned things like how to create a business, how to order products, what it means to be productive and how to market their business.

They also learned several literary elements like: Big guy vs little guy, how war starts, themes and characters, point of view, setting, language and meaning, conflict and resolution, satire, and point of view.

Prejudice, politics, political cartoons and how the media played a part in the novel was also topics of discussion.

We had eight businesses this year and raised a total of $1,599.95.

Thank you to all the parents, students and staff that helped to make this a meaningful learning experience for our sixth grade pushcart students.
