Wawasee SportsWARSAW – After a disastrous weekend at its own Wawasee Invite, the Warriors rebounded in a big way Thursday at the Joe Harris Invite. The Warriors shot a 308 to win by a stroke over host Warsaw at Rozella Golf Course.

Tristen Atwood continued to play phenomenal golf of late, shooting a 72 to lead the Warriors. Jeffrey Moore added a 76, Kaleb Perry a 79 from the five spot, and Cal Heinisch an 81 for Wawasee’s scoring players.

In victory, Wawasee wins its second invitational of the season, coupled with the Whitko Invite. The first-place showing Thursday in the invitational that was rescheduled from Tuesday due to inclement weather also avenged an eighth-place landing at the Wawasee Invite from last Saturday, where the Warriors finished below Joe Harris competitors Warsaw, Plymouth and NorthWood. The Pilgrims (312) and Panthers (317) finished third and fourth, respectively, Thursday.

“Obviously, we played very well tonight,” stated Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “We cut down on the big holes. It was nice to turn it around from our less-than-satisfactory performance in the Wawasee Invite.”

The Warriors shot 331 last Saturday at South Shore to finish in eighth place in its own 16-team tournament.

The Warsaw Black lineup, in finishing second, put together a performance to be proud of in the shadows of the WCHS campus. Senior Brandon Eckert fired a 71 to earn medalist honors and senior Jonny Hollar add a 74. Warsaw lost the one stroke to Wawasee with both senior Reid Cameron and sophomore Luke Johnson both turning in 82s as its final two marks. Sophomore Michael Jensen was off the pace with an 87.

Warsaw’s Orange lineup shot a 339. Sam Yeager paced the grouping with a 79, Jacob Lalonde had an 82, Tim Rata shot 87, Andrew Gauger fired a 91 and Luke Delp finished at 94. Competing as individuals, Tommy Meier shot 86 and Trent Rapp 94 for Warsaw.

Triton’s Gold team placed fifth at 331, led by Greg Music’s 77. Braden Kreft had an 80, Jordan Anderson shot 81, Bryce Swihart carded 95 and Gavin Eads turned in a 102.

Triton’s Blue squad ended up with a 406. Spencer Johnson shot 93 and Marc Eads 98. Austin Howell shot 106, Isaac Wall 109 and Brandon Damron 118.

The final team standings had Wawasee as champion at 308, followed by Warsaw Black (309), Plymouth (313), NorthWood (317), Triton Gold (331), Rochester (334), Warsaw Orange (339) and Triton Blue (406).

Wawasee will host Penn and LaVille on Monday at the Tippecanoe Lake Country Club. The Warriors will not play in the Homestead Invitational on Saturday due to scheduling conflicts. Warsaw will play in the Spring Preview at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel on Saturday. Triton will play Saturday in the LaVille Invitational at Sprig-O-Mint.
