A. Eugene “Gene” Ahlfeld, 90, of rural Wabash, died at 4:59 pm, Thursday, April 30, 2015, at Parkview Wabash Hospital.
He was born July 8, 1924 in Roann, to Ernest W. and Helen A. (Leibo) Ahlfeld.
Gene was a 1942 graduate of Roann High School. He married A. Lorraine Comer at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Peru, on Feb. 14, 1948.
He was an active farmer and enjoyed every minute of it. Gene was a charter member of the Wabash Zion Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. He co-founded the Roann Little League program. He enjoyed tractor pulling, where in 1949 he won the first Indiana State Tractor Pulling contest driving a Ford tractor. He also enjoyed fishing, watching Indiana University sports, following his grandchildren’s activities, playing cards with friends, and going out to eat. He was a Wabash County commissioner from 1980-84 and drove a school bus for Metropolitan School District several years.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Ahlfeld of Wabash; three sons, Ken (Terri) Ahlfeld and Kraig (Linda) Ahlfeld, both of Wabash, and Dr.Steven (Helen) Ahlfeld of Indianapolis; nine gandchildren, Matthew (Emily) Ahlfeld of Noblesville, Dr. Shawn (Stacy) Ahlfeld of Fort Thomas, Ky., Natalie (Erik) Pieczkowski of Hinsdale, Ill., Nicole (Kip) Chase of Shanghai, China, Jennifer (Mike) O’Neil of Kansas City, Kan., Toni (Troy) McKillip and Shelly (Brian) Myers, both of Wabash, Adam (Katherine) Ahlfeld and Christopher Ahlfeld, both of Indianapolis; and 17 great grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Zentz of Sebring, Fla., and Ruth Alber of Bloomington; and his brother, James (Pat) Ahlfeld of Dry Ridge, Ky.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert Ahlfeld, and one sister, Martha Moon.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 5, at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Ave., Wabash, with Pastor Jeremy Yeadon officiating. Burial will be in Roann Community Cemetery. Friends may call 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are Roann Covered Bridge Association or Wabash Zion Lutheran Church.
