Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) introduced a bill April 14 to create a citizens panel to recommend a female candidate to replace the image of Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.

The bill is part of a national campaign pushing for new $20 bills by the year 2020, the 100th anniversary of the constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote.

“Our paper currency is an important part of our everyday lives and reflects our values, traditions and history as Americans,” said Shaheen in a statement Wednesday. “It’s long overdue for that reflection to include the contribution of women.”

President Andrew Jackson has been on the $20 bill since 1928. However, paper currency is redesigned every seven to 10 years in an attempt to prevent counterfeiting. The treasury secretary or president can order changes to currency without an act of Congress.

The campaign has proposed several famous women as replacements for Jackson, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony, Betsy Ross, Harriet Tubman, Cherokee Chief Wilma Mankiller and others. A poll in March showed Roosevelt as the leading candidate.

“The incredible grassroots support for this idea shows that there’s a strong support for a woman to be the new face of the twenty dollar bill,” said Shaheen.
